About National Headquarters Suiten-gu (水天宮)
An ancient shrine located beside the majestic Chikugo River.
Details
Located near the Chikugo River in Fukuoka Prefecture, the head shrine of the water deity, Suwa Shrine, is found in various places across Japan and Hawaii. It was built to honor the Heike clan, who perished in the "Battle of Dan-no-ura" in 1190, and was relocated to its current site in 1650. Deeply revered as the god of water, it is believed to provide blessings for safe childbirth, fertility, and the removal of misfortunes.
In the shrine grounds, there is a "Hizen Komainu" (guardian lion-dog) said to possess miraculous powers. It is believed that if you have any pain, simply stroking the corresponding part of the Komainu can alleviate it. There is also the "Maki Shrine," dedicated to Maki Izumo no Kami, the 22nd chief priest who made significant contributions during the Meiji Restoration, and the monument of the famous haiku poet Takahama Kyoshi, among other attractions. The "Maki Izumo no Kami Memorial Hall," which displays artifacts related to Maki Izumo no Kami, can also be visited (reservation required).
The love story of the enshrined deities, Emperor Antoku and Princess Tamataregu, is associated with the "Camellia," which has become the emblem of Suwa Shrine. This location is also a spot for viewing camellias, with over 20 varieties planted near the main hall. They bloom from winter to spring, attracting many flower enthusiasts.
Various rich activities, including the "Spring Grand Festival," which prays for national prosperity, are held annually from May 3rd to 7th. The "Chikugo River Fireworks Festival," held every August, has a history of 350 years and is a must-see event to include in your itinerary.
