About Ninben Pond
A natural pond located within Japan's first urban park, "Ueno Onshi Park."
Details
Ueno Onshi Park (Ueno Park), covering an area of 530,000 square meters, is Japan's first urban park. Shinobazu Pond is located at the southern end of Ueno Park and is a natural pond with a circumference of about 2 kilometers. The name Shinobazu is said to originate from the early Shinobazu Hill between Ueno Plateau and Honjo Plateau (though there are many other theories).
Shinobazu Pond consists of three ponds. There is a "Boat Pond" where you can rent rowboats and swan boats (for a fee), a "Lotus Pond" where beautiful lotus flowers bloom from early July to late August, and the "Cormorant Pond" located within Ueno Zoo. On Nakano Island, which connects the three ponds, there is an octagonal structure called Shinobazu Bentendo, which can be seen from various spots around the pond.
This park, surrounded by natural greenery and resembling an urban oasis, is also a very famous cherry blossom viewing spot. The cherry blossom promenade around Shinobazu Pond is a great place for a stroll. It is also recommended to take a boat on the pond to enjoy the cherry blossoms.
