About Okinawa City Music Archive Music Village
A museum where you can listen to about 3,000 Okinawan music tracks.
Details
The museum, which collects information related to Okinawa's independently developed folk songs, jazz, rock music, and ballads, is located in "Ichibangai," a shopping street within "Koza Gate Street."
Inside the museum, there are rare records, music event pamphlets, and photographs that are hard to find on the market today, with approximately 3,000 audio sources available for listening. It is said that Okinawan music has evolved by incorporating Okinawa's unique scales, vocabulary, and historical background.
Furthermore, post-war Okinawa City thrived due to American customers, leading to an increased demand for jazz music. Subsequently, rock music became popular, and during the Vietnam War, rock bands catering to Americans emerged. In order to survive during the turbulent post-war period, Okinawans embraced American culture while also preserving their own.
The museum was established in 2014 with the aim of utilizing precious cultural resources to revitalize the area. It retains Okinawan music materials covering Okinawa City and the entire Okinawa Prefecture, which can be searched and viewed through tablet devices. Visitors can also listen to explanations from music village staff about the history of Okinawan music and more.
