About Old Asakura Family Residence
Modern Japanese-style architecture that has survived earthquakes and wartime in the metropolis.
Details
The "Former Asakura Residence," located near Daikanyama Station, quietly stands at the corner of Mukeizaka, showcasing a historical and elegant Japanese-style wooden house. It was built in 1919 (Taisho 8) by Asakura Torajiro, who served as the chairman of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly and the Shibuya Ward Assembly. The two-story wooden main house features a striking exterior with lower wooden panels and some plaster, highlighting the characteristics of luxury residences from that era. Miraculously, the building survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II, retaining its original appearance and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Another highlight is the garden within the premises. Designed as a strolling garden utilizing the "cliff line" topography of the continuous cliffs, the moderately sized garden is adorned with stone lanterns and other landscaping features. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere away from the urban hustle and bustle, taking leisurely walks while admiring seasonal views such as spring azaleas and autumn leaves.
Highlights
Built in 1919, it was the residence of Asakura Torajiro, the Speaker of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly and the Speaker of the Shibuya Ward Assembly. A precious building that survived the Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II, it is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The strolling garden, designed to take advantage of the cliffside terrain, is worth a visit.
