About Old Hakodate Ward Public Hall
It is as if capturing the elegant Western architectural masterpieces of the Meiji era.
Details
The Old Hakodate Ward Public Hall is a Western-style building constructed in 1910 (Meiji 43). After the completion of a large-scale preservation and renovation project in 2021, its beautiful appearance has been restored for the world to see. The architectural features include a colonial style façade, with symmetrical gable decorations and supporting columns on both sides when viewed from the front. The contrast between the bright yellow and the cool tones of aquamarine creates an elegant appearance.
The interior space feels as if it has captured and preserved the essence of the Meiji era, allowing visitors to seemingly travel back in time. Additionally, to maintain the character of the space, the furnishings are arranged according to their original positions from that time. Inside, there are various areas such as a billiard room, a small dining room, a large dining hall, a conference room office, a royal waiting room, and a bathing area, showcasing facilities specially set up in 1911 (Meiji 44) to welcome His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince.
The Old Hakodate Ward Public Hall is also known for its beautiful scenery. The building is situated on a small hillside, offering a view of the sea ahead. The balcony inside the hall is particularly the best viewing spot. Experiencing the breathtaking scenery that His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince once enjoyed in the hall is truly moving.
