About Old Moji Customs House
The beautiful red brick structure of the old customs house stands out remarkably in the harbor.
Details
The old Moji Customs House, facing the "Kanmon Straits," features a beautiful red brick exterior. Located in the nostalgic area of Moji Port, it is one of the cultural assets of Japan's heritage "Kanmon Nostalgic Straits."
The building was designed under the guidance of architect Tsuguki Raiko, one of the three great masters of Meiji architecture, who was also responsible for buildings such as the former Yokohama Specie Bank headquarters. It was used as an office from its completion in 1912 (Meiji 45) until the customs office was relocated in 1927 (Showa 2). The elegant style, based on the cultural revival style, leaves a deep impression, retaining the appearance of the exterior walls made of red bricks and marble from that time, and has been reopened for tourism purposes.
Today, the building serves not only as a facility for enjoying the view of the Kanmon Straits and a resting place for walks but also houses a display room for public relations. In the café run by a fruit and vegetable shop on the first floor, visitors can enjoy parfaits made with seasonal fruits and juices. From autumn to spring, the "Moji Port Nostalgic Romantic Lanterns" event is held, and the magnificent scene after the lights are turned on at night is not to be missed.
