About Old Yagyu Domain Retired Official Residence
The only samurai residence in Nara Prefecture, visiting this place allows you to reminisce about the past.
Details
During the late Edo period, Koyamada Shusuke, the chief retainer of the Yagyu Domain with a stipend of 12,000 koku, was a notable figure in revitalizing the finances of the Yagyu Domain. The residence built on the land awarded by the domain lord in recognition of this achievement is the former Yagyu Domain chief retainer's residence.
This is the only remaining samurai residence in Nara Prefecture. After Showa 39 (1964), it was transferred to the writer Yamaoka Sōhachi. It is said that the NHK Taiga drama "Haruno Sakamichi," featuring Yagyu Munenori as the main character, was conceived in this residence. After Yamaoka's passing, he bequeathed the residence to Nara City. Nara City renovated it into a museum, showcasing materials related to Koyamada Shusuke, the Yagyu Domain, and Yamaoka Sōhachi, and it currently also serves as the Yagyu Tourism Association.
Noteworthy are the guest rooms of the domain lord, which retain their original appearance, and the beautiful garden. It is said that the garden was constructed under the guidance of Shusuke's tea ceremony teacher, Kizu Sōsen. The impressive stone wall on the west side of the road is said to have been built by stone masons from Owari.
Highlights
