📝 Introduction

A beautiful arched bridge that blends seamlessly with the scenery of Lake Biwa.

📖 Details

The Omi Bridge, spanning Lake Biwa, opened in 1974 and connects Marunouchi-cho in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, with Shinhamacho in Kusatsu City. Originally a toll road, it became free to use in 2013. There are two major bridges over Lake Biwa: besides the Omi Bridge, there is also the Biwako Bridge, which connects Otsu City and Moriyama City. The Omi Bridge is 1,290 meters long and stands 12 meters above the lake surface, designed to blend harmoniously with Lake Biwa. Its arched shape and gentle curves create a beautiful landscape alongside the lush greenery. The silhouette of the bridge at sunset is particularly stunning and captivating. Certain sections of the bridge are elevated to allow for boat passage, providing excellent views from the bridge. It is a popular route for enjoying the magnificent scenery of Lake Biwa, making it an ideal drive and cycling route (BIWAICHI※1), favored by cycling enthusiasts. In addition to driving, pedestrians and cyclists can also cross the bridge, which takes about 15 minutes on foot. On clear days, you can often see people jogging on the bridge. ※1 BIWAICHI refers to cycling around Lake Biwa. It also denotes riding a bicycle to explore the scenic spots and attractions in the surrounding areas of the lake.
