About Omokagebashi (面影橋)
A cherry blossom viewing spot overflowing with nostalgic atmosphere.
Details
Omokage Bridge spans over the Kanda River, a first-class river in Tokyo, linking the boundary between Toshima Ward and Shinjuku Ward. It is well-known by the nickname "Tokyo Sakura Tram," and has even become the name of a station on the Arakawa Line. Especially in spring, it is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, attracting many hanami visitors.
The origin of the name "Omokage Bridge" has various theories; some are related to the sorrowful story of a princess, while others suggest it comes from the reflection of the figure of Ariwara no Narihira on the water's surface. It is depicted in Utagawa Hiroshige's "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo" and appears in several literary works and music as a well-known spot. Additionally, a monument marking "Yamabuki no Sato" stands at the foot of the bridge, said to be the location from a tale about the renowned warrior Ota Doken during the Muromachi period in the Kanto region.
During cherry blossom season, the view from Omokage Bridge, with cherry blossom branches extending from both sides of the river like a tunnel, is particularly beautiful, making it a recommended way to enjoy the blossoms.
Highlights
The stone bridge spans over the first-class river, 神田川 (Kanda River). In spring, the cherry blossom trees along both sides of the Kanda River bloom beautifully. This historic bridge is steeped in many anecdotes.
