The "Onomichi City Museum of Art" is located within "Senkoji Park," which encompasses the summit and mid-slope of Senkoji Mountain. Opened in 1980, it was renovated in 2003 under the design of the architectural master Tadao Ando.
This museum adheres to the philosophy of providing interdisciplinary, wide-ranging, and high-quality art, becoming a symbolic building of Senkoji Park.
The collection includes works by the Western painter Kazusaku Kobayashi, who has deep ties to Onomichi, as well as pieces by the female painter Gyokuen Hirata, born in Onomichi during the late Edo period. Works by the French painter Jules Dupré are also included. In addition to exhibitions, the museum hosts the Onomichi City Art Exhibition, which invites citizens to participate in a selection process to showcase selected and award-winning works.
Outside the exhibition rooms, the first-floor museum shop features original museum merchandise and related products inspired by world-renowned themes. On the second-floor lobby, visitors can enjoy a stunning view of the Onomichi waterway through glass windows. The museum also has a café for visitors to relax and take a break.
