Osaka Shinsekai Ganso Kushi Katsu Daruma was founded in 1929, located next to the iconic Tsutenkaku Tower in Osaka. It is the main store of "Kushi Katsu Daruma," which has expanded with branches throughout the Osaka area.
Daruma uses its own specially formulated oil to make the kushi katsu, resulting in a very low oil taste and making it easy to eat without feeling bloated. The batter is made from very fine bread flour, which is thin yet retains a crispy texture. There are up to 40 varieties of kushi katsu, including beef, pork, shrimp, tomato, onion, and shiitake mushrooms. The freshly fried kushi katsu is served with a special sauce that has been developed through multiple iterations.
If you're unsure of what to order, it's recommended to go for a set combination. The standard "Main Store Combination Set" includes 9 skewers of kushi katsu such as beef, lotus root, and sausage, along with the specialty "Doteyaki," which features beef tendons and konjac simmered in miso. It's truly a supreme delight.
One important rule to note while dining is the prohibition against double-dipping in the sauce. The sauce served in containers is meant for sharing among guests, so once you’ve bitten into a kushi katsu, you cannot dip it again, even if you feel the sauce is lacking in flavor. This rule is in place to ensure everyone can enjoy their meal comfortably, so please do not forget it.
