The museum specializes in collecting Ukiyo-e and houses approximately 15,000 original paintings and woodblock prints. In addition to works by historically significant Ukiyo-e masters such as Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, and Kitagawa Utamaro, it also includes pieces from various periods of Ukiyo-e, from its flourishing to its decline, making its collection one of the largest and most comprehensive in the world.
This museum was established to open to the public the Ukiyo-e collection of the late Ota Seizo, who served as the president of the Toho Life Insurance Mutual Company, among other positions. The collection primarily features around 12,000 works gathered by Ota Seizo, and it continues to grow.
Each month, based on different exhibition themes, 80 to 100 pieces are selected from the vast collection for display. Each exhibition features different themes and perspectives, ensuring that visitors can make new discoveries no matter how many times they have visited. Additionally, there are explanatory activities led by art educators, as well as opportunities to participate in lectures or film screenings related to Ukiyo-e and Edo culture.
