📝 Introduction
The garden of Ōtomo Sōrin, revived in modern times.
📖 Details
The Ōtomo Castle was no longer used for about 200 years after being invaded by the Shimazu clan from the late 14th century to the late 16th century. It later became a stronghold managed by the prominent Ōtomo family in Bungo Province. In a 1998 excavation, large-scale garden ruins were discovered, and based on the investigation results, it was restored to its former appearance and opened to the public. It is a precious site that conveys the original look of medieval gardens.
Ōtomo Castle is located in the center of the international trade city known as Funai, covering an area of about 200 meters square. The large foundation stone remains in the center of the castle are confirmed to be the main building where political and ceremonial activities took place at that time. The garden is located to the south, covering more than 5,000 square meters, and features a pond measuring 67 meters east-west and 30 meters north-south, making it quite large. Various elements such as waterfalls, islands, bays, artificial hills, and scenic stones are arranged throughout the garden. The pond on the east side offers a vibrant landscape, while the pond on the west side is characterized by a calm scenery, showcasing a unique style of Sengoku period gardens that has been restored.
The ruins are adjacent to the "Nanban BVNGO Exchange Hall," which introduces the history of the Ōtomo clan, and ongoing excavation and restoration work is being conducted at the Ōtomo Castle site.
