About Ryougokou Park
It has a deep connection with Sendai and is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot in Sendai, the City of Forests.
Details
Ryuogakuen Park was selected as one of Japan's 100 Urban Parks in 1989 and is widely known as a representative urban park of Sendai. The park covers an area of 11.2 hectares, which is about 2.4 times the size of Tokyo Dome. It has a deep historical connection with the lord of the Sendai domain; it is said that the first lord, Date Masamune, considered Ryuogakuen as one of the candidate sites when constructing Sendai Castle.
Ryuogakuen Park originated from the Shaka-do, built by the fourth lord of Sendai, Date Tadamune, to honor his biological mother. The surrounding area was developed into facilities such as a riding ground, and over a thousand weeping cherry trees were brought from Kyoto and planted here, creating a cherry blossom viewing area that has become a popular destination for tourists.
Today, in addition to cherry trees, the park also features wisteria, bush clover, and other plants, allowing visitors to enjoy different scenery throughout the seasons. Additionally, there is a sculpture fountain called "Forest Song," which is particularly appreciated by the public for its refreshing atmosphere in the summer. The park also includes a historical and folk museum, providing visitors with a closer look at the history and culture of Sendai.
