About Ryugu Sea Cave (龍宮窟)
A mysterious power spot created by nature.
Details
Ryugu Cave (龍宮窟) is a cave located in the Tonomiya area of Shimoda City at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula and is a representative tourist attraction of Izu Shimoda.
About 1 million years ago, the eruption of underwater volcanoes in the southern Izu Peninsula created a large accumulation of materials, causing the earth’s crust to rise and forming the current landscape. The waves crashing against the coast, shaped by these tectonic shifts, eroded the weak layers and faults, creating what are known as "marine erosion caves," of which Ryugu Cave is one.
Inside Ryugu Cave, there is also a skylight formed by the collapse of the cave ceiling, which has a diameter of 50 meters, making it the largest skylight among those found throughout Izu. Stepping into the cave allows visitors to admire the beautifully cobalt blue sea with high transparency, the stunning yellow-brown layers of the cave, and the light streaming in, creating a mysterious space intertwined with nature.
Additionally, a path is laid out above the cave, and viewed from above, the cave appears heart-shaped, making it a popular spot loved by couples.
