⛩️ Ryōziji Temple

📝 Introduction

A mountain temple for ascetic training, protected by imposing Nio statues.

📖 Details

Ryōzai-ji Temple is located in the middle of Ryōzai Mountain in the center of the Kunisaki Peninsula and is a temple of the Tendai sect. It was founded in 718 by the Bodhisattva Ninnin and serves as the main temple of the Rokushō Manzan, a center for mountain ascetic practices. During the Edo period, it was a place of prayer for the Matsudaira family of the Kitsuki Domain. At the entrance to the approach leading to Ryōzai-ji, there stands the largest (2.3 meters) and acclaimed masterpiece of a Nio statue in Kunisaki. Worshippers touch the feet of the Nio statue to pray for health in their waist and legs. Walking up the stone steps covered in moss leads to the mountain gate and study hall, as well as the goma hall where goma fire rituals are held on the 28th of each month, and the great lecture hall. At the top of the 70 stone steps lies the Okunoin, which enshrines the Eleven-Faced Kannon Bodhisattva and two major deities, both of whom are prayed to for fertility. The interior of Ryōzai-ji has been selected as one of the "100 Best Forest Bathing Forests" and is also a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves. The spring water that flows from the Suikō Kannon Hall is known as a sacred spring, making it a popular energy spot.
