The Saga Prefectural Kyushu Ceramic Museum collects and displays ceramics from all over the Kyushu region, as well as works by contemporary ceramic artists.
The exhibition hall, reopened in April 2022 after renovations, presents the history of Arita ware in a simple and easy-to-understand manner. A must-see is the collection of ancient Imari ware from the Kubo Collection, which was favored by European nobility and specifically exported abroad. The luxurious and splendid export ceramics deeply attract every visitor.
In the Shibata couple's collection room, you can see items from the Edo period Arita ware collection. About a thousand rare ceramics have been carefully selected for display from a collection of approximately ten thousand items, making it well worth a visit.
In addition, there are exhibition rooms showcasing ancient Karatsu and Kakiemon styles, as well as Nabeshima clan ceramics, along with a permanent exhibition that conveys modern Kyushu ceramic art. The exhibition hall also features a tea room where various special exhibitions are held.
Inside the exhibition hall, there is an "Arita ware mechanical music clock," and outside the museum, 25 porcelain clocks gifted by Meissen, Germany, a sister city of Arita Town, emit beautiful sounds.
