The protagonist of the novel "Saka no Ue no Kumo," written by Sima Liao Tai Lang, is the historical figures from Matsuyama: "Akiyama Masanori," "Akiyama Yoshifuru," and "Masaoka Shiki." The Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum is themed around this novel, showcasing the lives of these three individuals and the historical context of their time.
The museum is a building with one basement level and four above-ground levels, designed by the world-renowned architect Tadao Ando. The master focused on incorporating the historical culture and natural scenery surrounding Matsuyama Castle into the architectural style. The exterior features large glass curtain walls to bring in the greenery and light of the surrounding area, while the floors are connected by ramps, allowing visitors to leisurely explore and reflect as they ascend.
Inside the museum, there are displays related to the novel "Saka no Ue no Kumo," as well as artifacts associated with the protagonists. Visitors can also see numerous books and historical documents from Japan's Meiji period.
The second floor features a free-access "Library and Relaxation Area." In the adjoining café, guests can enjoy original coffee and weekend-only desserts, served in traditional Ehime crafts, Tobe-yaki porcelain, for tea and food.
