📖 Details

Sakurajima is a complex active volcano located in Kagoshima Prefecture's Kinko Bay, serving as a landmark for Kagoshima and belonging to Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park. Sakurajima was formed approximately 26,000 years ago and has experienced 17 volcanic eruptions to date. During the major eruption in 1914, the lava flow filled the strait, connecting the originally isolated Sakurajima to the Osumi Peninsula, making it part of the peninsula. Small-scale volcanic eruptions occur almost daily. Many people still reside on Sakurajima today. Although volcanic eruptions pose significant dangers, they also bring abundant natural resources. For instance, delicious crops are cultivated in the fertile volcanic ash soil, and high-quality hot springs have formed due to the volcanic region. The thick smoke billowing from the crater is impressive, and the unique scenery is a major attraction for visitors to Sakurajima. Transportation from Kagoshima city to Sakurajima is quite simple; it only takes 15 minutes by taking the "Sakurajima Ferry." From the ferry, passengers can enjoy views of the smoke rising from the Sakurajima volcano and the cityscape of Kagoshima, and if lucky, they might even see dolphins. Additionally, the "Yunohira Observation Deck" is the highest viewpoint accessible to general visitors. It allows for a close-up experience of the volcano's power and a clear view of the smoke emanating from the crater. Moreover, within Sakurajima, the "Sakurajima Lava Nagisa Park" features a foot bath pool that is 100 meters long, making it the largest foot bath in Japan. Visitors can enjoy a free foot bath here to relieve the fatigue of their journey.
