About Sanzen-in

The three main temples of the Tendai sect are known for their expansive gardens, famous for their beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons.

Details

Sanzen-in is one of the three monzeki temples of the Tendai sect, established by high priests during the creation of Enryaku-ji on Mount Hiei, built as a small hermitage in the southern valley of the East Pagoda. The term "monzeki temple" refers to prestigious temples where princes and members of the imperial family have served as successive head priests. It has since relocated multiple times between Omi Sakamoto and Kyoto's inner city, ultimately moving to its current location during the Meiji period, when the temple name was changed to "Sanzen-in" in Ohara. The statue of Yakushi Nyorai (Bhaisajyaguru) enshrined in the main hall is said to have been created by the renowned Japanese Buddhist monk Saicho. The national treasure, the Amida Sanzon seated statue, along with the fusuma-e (sliding door paintings) offered by artists from the Kyoto painting school, preserves many precious cultural assets that are a must-see. The grounds feature several solemn halls and beautifully landscaped gardens that change with the seasons. Notably, the Juhakuen garden, viewed from the guest hall, and the Yaseien garden, seen from the main hall, present stunning picturesque views. Additionally, in the moss-covered garden, one can catch a glimpse of the charming "Dōjizō" stone sculpture by the sculptor Sugimura Takakazu. There are also experiential activities such as listening to Buddhist teachings and copying sutras, which provide opportunities to engage with Japanese culture. If time permits, these experiences are highly recommended.
