About Sapporo Clock Tower
Sapporo's earliest landmark has now been transformed into a museum.
Details
Originally known as the "Sapporo Agricultural School Drill Hall," it was built to cultivate leaders for the development of Hokkaido. Under the direction of Governor Kiyotaka Kuroda, who visited during the completion ceremony, the Sapporo Clock Tower, now a beloved landmark of Sapporo, was completed.
From 1995 to 1998, a large-scale preservation and renovation project was carried out, transforming it into a museum. The first floor features exhibitions on Sapporo's cultural assets and information related to the clock tower. The second floor recreates the structure of the lecture hall from that time; during the day, it serves as an exhibition space, and at night, it is used for concerts, lectures, and even private events such as wedding ceremonies.
The clock tower chimes every hour, and it is recommended to visit at 12 o'clock when the chimes are most frequent. Additionally, there are periodic activities starting at 9:15 AM for about 10 minutes in the second-floor hall, where the tower clock manufactured by Howard Company is wound and a mechanical explanation is provided.
Highlights
Completed almost simultaneously with the history of Sapporo's development, it was once a landmark of Sapporo. The first and second floors serve as exhibition rooms, while the second floor is open for use as a hall at night. The best time to visit is at 12 o'clock, when the bell tower rings the most.
