Exhibiting famous Satsuma ware from both domestic and international sources, along with works related to Satsuma history.
Details
Located within the grounds of the ryokan "Ibusuki Hakusuikan" in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, this art museum has received a one-star rating from the Michelin Green Guide. With the concept of "Come here to understand Satsuma," it showcases 380 pieces from a collection of approximately 3,000 items gathered by the founder of Ibusuki Hakusuikan and the current owner, a father-son duo.
The museum is divided into four exhibition areas: "Kinran no Ma," where the walls are adorned with 10,000 sheets of gold leaf; "Ishin no Ma," displaying the luxurious and splendid Satsuma ware known as Kinran-de; "Satsuma no Ma," focusing on great figures from Satsuma such as Saigo Takamori; and "Mingyō no Ma," featuring works by painters from the Satsuma art scene.
The building's design is inspired by the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin Temple in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture, featuring side halls on either side of the main hall and a surrounding pond that reflects the scenery like a mirror. With a tiled roof, wooden latticework, and a grid-like exterior, the garden also boasts wisteria that has been propagated from the world heritage site of Byodoin, all of which are worth appreciating in detail.
Additionally, there is a restaurant that emphasizes local production for local consumption and a museum shop selling original merchandise featuring Satsuma pottery.
