🗺️ Satsuma pottery production area "Miyama"

📝 Introduction

The Satsuma ware production area is scattered with many Satsuma pottery kilns.

📖 Details

Located in the Miyama area of Kagoshima Prefecture, in addition to the Satsuma pottery kilns, there are many workshops, cafes, restaurants, and paths through bamboo groves that exude local charm. In the late 16th century, the 17th lord of the Satsuma domain, Shimazu Yoshihiro, brought back about 80 ceramic artisans when he returned from military campaigns in Korea. Half of them relocated to this area, where they established kilns and produced pottery under the protection of the Shimazu family. Satsuma ware is divided into white Satsuma and black Satsuma; white Satsuma, which features ornate decorations, was reserved for the lords during the feudal period, while black Satsuma was used by ordinary citizens as everyday utensils. In 1867, at the Paris Exposition Universelle, Satsuma domain showcased its wares independently, and white Satsuma received high praise in Europe. Each pottery kiln has its own shop. One of the representative kilns of Satsuma ware, the Chinjukan kiln, offers tours to observe the actual kiln operations, and there is a rich collection available for viewing (additional fees apply). Additionally, at the pottery experience facility "Miyama Toyukan," visitors can try their hand at pottery using a potter's wheel. The "Miyama CRAFT WEEK," held in November, offers numerous activities, allowing participants to fully experience the autumn charm of Miyama over the course of a week.
