About Seisunkaku
Adjacent to Kenrokuen, it is a luxurious palace of the Maeda family, adorned with traditional Kaga crafts.
Details
Seisonkaku is located next to Kenrokuen and was built in 1863 by the 13th lord of the Kaga Domain, Maeda Nariyasu, for his mother, Ryoko, the legal wife of the 12th lord, Maeda Narinaga. Due to its position in the southeast direction of Kanazawa Castle and the fact that Ryoko came from the Takatsukasa family in Kyoto, which is known for its Tatsumi-den, it was originally called Tatsumi Goten. The details are exquisitely crafted, showcasing the luxurious decorations that embody the finest Kaga craftsmanship.
It features a rare combination of samurai-style study and sukiya-style study architecture, making it the only existing mansion of a daimyō's legal wife in Japan. Starting from the official reception area on the first floor, known as "Etsume no Ma," it consists of four parts: the main hall, the bedroom, the living room, and the tea room. The second floor has several uniquely styled rooms in the sukiya style. The transom of "Etsume no Ma" and the colored walls of "Gunjō no Ma" are characterized by their vibrant colors. The walls are covered with wallpaper made from gold dust, and the sliding doors feature paintings of flowers and birds, with intricate luxurious decorations that are not to be missed. Additionally, the bold incorporation of Dutch-imported glass into the snow-viewing shoji reflects the influence of Western culture in the late Edo period, which is also noteworthy.
