About Sendai Media Center
I recommend stopping by local cultural facilities that are deeply rooted in the community during your walk.
Details
The 700-meter-long Zelkova tree-lined avenue, known as Jozenji-dori, is a symbolic road in Sendai, the Forest City. Along Jozenji-dori, there is the Sendai Media Center, a multi-cultural facility characterized by its striking all-glass façade. The building, which has two underground floors and seven above ground, houses a variety of facilities including the Sendai Citizen's Library, event spaces, art galleries, recording studios, and a café.
The term "Media Center" in French conveys the meaning of "audiovisual storage" or "audiovisual resource room." It serves as a hub for collecting, preserving, and disseminating information from various media, as well as hosting rich activities and themed lectures related to art and visual culture. Opened in 2001, this uniquely structured building is one of the representative works of architect Toyo Ito. It has received numerous architectural awards, including the Good Design Award for that year, attracting many architecture enthusiasts from both Japan and abroad.
The museum shop "KANEIRI Museum Shop6" sells crafts made in the six prefectures of the Tohoku region, along with selected books, stationery, and miscellaneous goods. There is also the café "Crépuscule Café," where visitors can enjoy dozens of Belgian beers, making it a convenient stop while strolling along Jozenji-dori.
