Located on the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido, "Shimamu-i Coast" is a scenic spot known for its clear sea and towering cliffs. This coast is listed as one of the "Top 100 Beaches in Japan," and the pristine, beautiful sea is famously referred to as "Shakotan Blue."
Visitors can access the coast via a pedestrian tunnel. After passing through the dim tunnel, one is greeted by the sight of massive rocks and the majestic cliffs, along with the dazzling blue sea. The breathtaking scenery captivates the heart and leaves one enchanted. You can walk to the edge of the cliffs where the waves crash, experiencing the clear seawater firsthand.
In early summer, the cliffs are adorned with the town flower of Shakotan, "Ezo Daylily," adding vibrant colors to the coast. If you're lucky, you might even spot seals in the winter. At sunset, the sun sinking below the horizon paints the sea in shades of crimson, creating a dreamlike scene. At night, you can look up and admire the brilliant stars filling the sky.
