About Shiman Onsen (Shiman Hot Springs)
Relax your body and mind in the spring that can improve gastrointestinal diseases.
Details
Located in the upper reaches of the Shimanami River, which originates from the Sanguo Mountain Range, the Shiman Onsen in the lush National Park is a famous hot spring with over a thousand years of history. It is said that a warrior of the Genji clan, guided by a mysterious boy (an incarnation of a deity), heard the divine oracle proclaiming, "The sacred spring that heals forty thousand kinds of ailments," leading to the discovery of the continuously gushing hot spring.
Renowned as a therapeutic hot spring resort, the Sanada clan, which governed the area, spent many years restoring the roads and bridges that had been destroyed by war. Shortly after the war, a sign appeared reading "Shiman Onsen, which washes away the dust of the world," drawing significant attention as a family-friendly hot spring destination.
Among its therapeutic effects, it is most famous for treating "gastrointestinal diseases," earning it recognition as one of Japan's three great hot springs for such ailments. Additionally, due to its proximity to Kusatsu Onsen, it has long been known as "the finishing hot spring of Kusatsu." It is said that after enjoying the hot spring treatment at the highly acidic Kusatsu Onsen, one should then immerse themselves in the sulfate spring of Shiman Onsen, which has moisturizing and whitening effects, to complete the therapeutic experience.
With its preserved ancient wooden ryokan architecture and numerous long-established inns boasting their own hot spring sources, Shiman Onsen is a precious hot spring town for understanding Japan's onsen culture.
