Shimada Marine Aquarium is built using the natural bay of "Shimada Bay" at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula, blending beautifully with the surrounding nature of Wakaura. The main attraction is the beloved "dolphins." Visitors can enjoy a stunning dolphin show on a marine stage set against a natural backdrop. The aquarium features a special seating area called the "Amazing sheet," where dolphins leap over the audience, splashing refreshing water on them—a truly rare experience. Shimada Marine Aquarium also offers various interactive activities, such as feeding dolphins, allowing for close encounters with these marine creatures (registration on the day is available). Daily, there is an event called Dolphin School, where visitors can observe trainers working with dolphins for free, getting a close-up view of the dolphins' expressions and listening to explanations about their ecology from the caretakers. In addition to the popular dolphins, there are interactive experiences with otters and penguins, as well as sea lion and seal performances (for a fee), providing fun opportunities to interact with marine life. The sea lion performances, which are quite rare worldwide, are particularly popular. The agility and grace of the sea lions, both on land and underwater, are truly moving. Additionally, the large tank "Aqua Dome Perry" located within the bay recreates the natural scenery of the Izu Sea. Visitors can see over 50 species of marine life, including fish and invertebrates, swimming freely, making it a favorite attraction. Shimada Marine Aquarium is characterized by its wide variety of interactive activities, making it an experiential aquarium where both adults and children can have an enjoyable time interacting closely with dolphins and other marine life.
