🗺️ Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (新宿御苑)

📝 Introduction

A beautiful garden where the natural scenery of the four seasons and historic buildings are perfectly integrated.

📖 Details

Shinjuku Gyoen was once a samurai residence during the Edo period. In 1906 (Meiji 39), it was planned as a royal garden and is now open to the public. Within the expansive 58.3 hectares of the garden, there are three distinct types of gardens: a Japanese garden, a formal garden, and a landscape garden, which has earned it the reputation of being a modern Western-style garden. Shinjuku Gyoen also features a greenhouse where visitors can observe rare plants from Japan and around the world. In spring, approximately 70 varieties and 900 cherry blossom trees can be enjoyed, while in autumn, visitors can admire the breathtaking beauty of the foliage.

⭐ Highlights

Designated as one of the "One Hundred Famous Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan," the park features approximately 900 cherry blossom trees. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the harmonious blend of historical architecture and nature. Bringing alcoholic beverages is prohibited, as well as smoking and using playground equipment (except for the "Children's Square," where playground equipment is allowed).

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will the cherry blossom viewing period be very crowded?

A: As the cherry blossoms of Somei Yoshino near full bloom during the holidays, the number of visitors to the park will peak. At this time, the park will be very crowded, and entry may require a reservation. Please check the "Official Website of Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden" in advance. The various types of double cherry blossoms (八重桜, yaezakura) unique to Shinjuku Gyoen usually reach full bloom when Somei Yoshino begins to wilt. If you want to enjoy the double cherry blossoms, it is recommended to visit around early to mid-April (the specific dates may vary slightly each year). Normally, there are three entrances: Shinjuku Gate (新宿門), Okido Gate (大木戸門), and Sendagaya Gate (千駄谷門). During the cherry blossom viewing period, the closest entrance to Shinjuku Station, the Shinjuku Gate, is extremely crowded, so it is advisable to enter through the Okido Gate or Sendagaya Gate.
