About Shinkyogoku Shopping Street
The shopping streets in the center of Kyoto offer everything from shopping to collecting御朱印 (goshuin).
Details
Shinkyogoku Street is located between Sanjo Street and Shijo Street in the center of Kyoto, stretching approximately 500 meters in a north-south direction. The Shinkyogoku Shopping Arcade celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2022, making it the second oldest shopping street in Japan. It is always bustling with local residents, tourists, and students on school trips.
The shopping arcade is lined with a diverse range of shops, including clothing stores, souvenir shops, and cinemas, featuring arcades that allow for comfortable shopping even on rainy days. In terms of food, there are beloved old establishments favored by locals as well as popular takeout spots, showcasing a variety of both new and traditional shops. This reflects Kyoto's respect for tradition while actively embracing new trends.
Shinkyogoku Street was redeveloped from the temple grounds in the Teramachi area during the Meiji era. Today, the shopping arcade includes the famous Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, known for its torii gate that passes through a building, along with one shrine and seven temples. As a result, the "Goshuin Pilgrimage," where visitors collect goshuin stamps from eight temples and shrines in one visit, is also quite popular.
