About Showa Nostalgia Product Museum
Nostalgic Showa-era lifestyle goods are a feast for the eyes! A museum loved by retro enthusiasts.
Details
The Showa Nostalgia Product Museum is located on the old "Kyu-Ome Street" in the former Tokyo city of Ome, near the entrance to the "Sumiyoshi Shrine" approach. As its name suggests, the museum showcases products sold during the Showa era of the 30s to 40s (1955 to 1974), making it an irresistible destination for retro enthusiasts.
Housed in a wooden residence that was converted from a furniture store, the museum displays packaging and signs for various products such as medicines, cigarettes, stationery, and books. Particularly moving for those familiar with that era is the recreated space of a Showa-era snack shop, where snacks are placed in boxes or containers, providing a high level of nostalgia. There is also a popular section showcasing the works of Kubo Kan, known as "the last movie poster artist."
On the second floor, there are materials related to local folk tales from Ome, which are said to have inspired Koizumi Yakumo's "Yuki-onna" (Snow Woman). About 80 meters down the same street is the sister museum, the "Showa Lantern Museum," which features the works of cat-inspired ink artists Arita Hiromi (ひろみ) and Chabo San (ちゃぼさん), as well as a gallery of three-dimensional models of Ome from the Showa era, making it worth a visit as well.
