About Suō Kokubun-ji
An ancient temple with a history of 1200 years and numerous cultural treasures, possessing precious historical value.
Details
The Suō Kokubun-ji is one of the official temples established by Emperor Shōmu in the 13th year of the Tenpyo era (741) as part of the nationwide construction of Kokubun-ji temples. It was built to pray for "national peace and the well-being of the people, to dispel disasters and bring blessings," aiming to protect the citizens from the prevalent diseases and conflicts of the time, and to seek bountiful harvests. It is a special head temple of the Kōyasan Shingon sect, dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai.
During the Heian period, the temple experienced a decline, but in the Kamakura period, it received financial support from the Tōdaiji, which was responsible for the overall Kokubun-ji temples in Suō Province, allowing Suō Kokubun-ji to be revitalized. Subsequently, it was maintained by the Ōuchi and Mōri clans. The temple grounds from that time have been largely preserved to this day, which is quite rare in the country. It is the only Kokubun-ji temple designated as a national historic site within an "old temple precinct."
Although the current Nio Gate and main hall (Kondō) were built in later years, investigations revealed that the Kondō was reconstructed using the original foundation stones from its initial construction site, and it has also been designated as an important cultural property. Additionally, within the temple grounds, there is a memorial stone for local patriots who died in the "Boshin War" during the first year of the Genji era (1864).
Highlights
It houses important cultural properties from the early Heian period, such as the Nikkō and Gekkō Bodhisattvas, the Four Heavenly Kings, and the seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai from the Muromachi period, along with many precious Buddhist statues and treasures.
The main hall (Daikondō) features a two-layered roof structure known as the irimoya-zukuri, and it has been preserved in its original construction location, making it quite rare and valuable.
In summer, the crape myrtle, which symbolizes "disaster prevention," blooms beautifully here. There are various types of offerings available, and visitors can also receive goshuin (temple seals).
