🗺️ Sunpu Castle Park駿府城公園
About Sunpu Castle Park
The residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Shogunate, has been transformed into a lush green public park.
Details
Sunpu Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun who established the Edo Shogunate, in the 13th year of Tenshō (1585). After retiring from the position of shogun, he became known as the "Ogosho" and spent his later years here, eventually transforming the ruins of Sunpu Castle into a public park. This citizen park, located in the center of Shizuoka City, is surrounded by double moats and stone walls, making it a popular tourist destination.
Inside the park, visitors can explore the restored East Gate of Sunpu Castle, the Tatsumi Turret, and the Koin Turret, all of which require an additional ticket for entry. The East Gate, restored in 1996, and the rare L-shaped Tatsumi Turret, restored in 1989, are both open as museums. The floors and ceilings of the Koin Turret from the first to the third floor have been completely removed, allowing visitors to see the structure of the turret restored using traditional methods, providing a truly valuable experience.
Additionally, there is a statue of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who enjoyed his later years at Sunpu Castle, as well as the "Momijiyama Garden," which features beautiful seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms in spring and autumn leaves in fall, and the "Fujimiyama Square," where visitors can enjoy a distant view of Mount Fuji on clear days, among other diverse attractions.
