About Suntory Yamazaki Distillery

Japan's first distillery to produce malt whisky, the "Yamazaki Whisky Museum" and the distillery can be visited by making a reservation in advance.

Details

The Suntory Yamazaki Distillery is widely known as the birthplace of Japanese whisky. Founded in 1923 (Taisho 12) by Suntory's founder, Shinjiro Torii, it was established with the vision of creating a Japanese whisky that suits the delicate palate of the Japanese people. In pursuit of clear, pure water and a natural environment suitable for whisky maturation, the distillery settled in Yamazaki, producing a variety of whiskies. In the 2003 International Spirits Challenge (ISC2003), the single malt whisky "Yamazaki 21" produced by the Yamazaki Distillery became the first Japanese whisky to win a gold medal. The techniques and history nurtured in Yamazaki have gained recognition for their world-renowned flavors. The "Yamazaki Whisky Museum," located on the premises, can be visited for free with a prior reservation. The tour introduces stories from the founding period, showcases whisky production techniques and their evolution, and features a shop selling exclusive products. There is also a paid tasting counter where visitors can enjoy sampling various whiskies from around the world. The cost of the tour at the Yamazaki Distillery includes a guided visit through the whisky production process. Visitors can closely observe the different production processes of various raw spirits, which is very popular. Additionally, they can taste the distillery's unique raw spirits and enjoy the delicate and rich flavor of the single malt whisky "Yamazaki."
