🗺️ Takachiho Gorge高千穂峡

Takachiho Gorge is a V-shaped canyon formed by lava that flowed from Mount Aso during a volcanic eruption, shaped by the erosion of the Gokase River over tens of thousands of years. The cliffs on both sides of the gorge average 80 meters high (with the highest point around 100 meters) and stretch 7 kilometers from east to west, offering a spectacular view. Takachiho Gorge is located in Takachiho Town, in the northwestern part of Miyazaki Prefecture, near the center of the Kyushu mountain range, and is designated as a national scenic spot and natural monument by the Japanese government. The highlight of Takachiho Gorge is the "Manai Falls," which cascades down from a 17-meter high cliff and is also one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. Visitors can rent small boats to get close to the falls. Part of the walking trail is equipped with accessible pathways, allowing even wheelchair users to enjoy a close view of the waterfall. Another famous sight is the "Takachiho Three Bridges," which can be seen from the walking trail and is a popular photo spot. The three uniquely designed arched bridges span the same gorge, showcasing a unique charm that blends the old and new eras. It is said to be the only place in Japan where one can see three arched bridges from different periods at the same time. Takachiho is also the homeland of Japanese mythology and folklore, as well as a renowned energy spot.

Once the stage for many myths and folklore, it is also famous as an energy spot. A popular shooting location favored by photographers. You can rent a small boat to get close to the waterfall and gaze up at the dynamic cascade from below. Every year, a summer-only nighttime illumination event is held along the Manai Falls walking trail. Part of the trail is designed as an accessible path so that wheelchair users can also enjoy the waterfall up close.
