The somen specialty store "Maru Katsu Takada Shoten," operated by the Miwa Somen, is located in the Miwa area of Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture, which is known as the birthplace of somen and has a history of 1300 years. In addition to selling hand-stretched somen made in-store, there is also a café called "sumen." This somen, introduced from China during the Nara period, has now become a representative traditional noodle dish in Japan, offering a new way to enjoy it. There are three types of broth available to enhance the deliciousness of the somen. The "Ebi Shio Kin Tsuyu (蝦味塩金つゆ)" is made by simmering small dried fish and shrimp, with the addition of plum vinegar for a refreshing taste. The "Honkaku Kuro Tsuyu (本格黒つゆ)" is rich in the aroma of dried shiitake mushrooms and bonito broth, representing the most classic flavor. The "Tarappuri Kurumi Shiro Tsuyu (たっぷり胡桃白つゆ)" is based on the black broth with a generous amount of walnuts and a touch of white miso to add a Chinese flavor. Each broth can be chosen as either cold or hot, and there are various toppings available. The somen comes in two options: "Tsururi (つるり)," which has been aged for a year, and "Sarari (さらり)," which is half the diameter of regular somen. Additionally, there are many delicious dishes that cannot be found elsewhere, including "Chahan Tofu Sushi," which features vinegared rice steamed with roasted tea and mixed with Nara pickles, as well as desserts like cheesecake made from the sake lees of the renowned Miwa brewery "Imanishi Shuzō" and domestic cream cheese.
