About Tanegashima Space Center

Built on the coastline of Tanegashima, it is claimed to be the largest in Japan and the most beautiful rocket launch site in the world.

Details

Located on Tanegashima Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, there is a large rocket launch site operated by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). Covering an area of 970 square meters, it is the largest in Japan and the most important space development base in the country. The launch site is situated in the southeastern part of the island, surrounded by coral reef waters and lush forests, earning it the reputation of "the most beautiful rocket launch site in the world." The "Space Science and Technology Museum" within the space center features various materials and experiential displays, allowing visitors to easily and enjoyably learn about rockets, artificial satellites, celestial bodies, and planets related to space development. The "Lift-Off Theater" in the museum offers an immersive rocket launch experience through a large wall screen, along with a life-size model of the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" on the International Space Station, among many other captivating exhibits. Guided tours led by staff are available to explore the launch facilities, including the launch site and the integrated control building. A bus tour introducing the facilities (reservation required) is also highly praised. The museum is closed on rocket launch days, so it is recommended to check the official website in advance.
