🗺️ Terasaka Rice Terraces

📝 Introduction

The largest rice terraces in Saitama Prefecture are filled with enchanting Japanese rural scenery.

📖 Details

Terasaka Rice Terraces are the largest terraced rice fields in Saitama Prefecture, showcasing a unique rural landscape that is characteristic of Japan. The total area is approximately 5.2 hectares, with about 4 hectares dedicated to rice paddies. The rice terraces, set against the backdrop of Mount Bukō, are distributed across gentle hills and present different sceneries with the changing seasons. In early summer, there are clusters of fresh green shoots after planting, while in early autumn, golden rice ears and red cluster amaryllis bloom. No matter when you visit, you can enjoy the distinctive rural scenery of Japan. As a popular attraction that draws many tourists, there are various vibrant activities throughout the year. In summer, the "Terasaka Rice Terraces Firefly Bonfire Festival" is held for just one night, where about 600 bonfires are lit, creating a dreamlike world that cannot be experienced in the city. In autumn, the "Terasaka Rice Terraces Higanbana Festival" is held, coinciding with the blooming of approximately 2 million cluster amaryllis, turning the fields into a sea of red flowers. To protect the rice terraces and provide more people with the opportunity to engage with and experience rice cultivation, local farmers established the "Terasaka Rice Terraces School" in 2002. The students mainly consist of urban residents from within and outside Saitama Prefecture. The experiential courses cover the entire process of rice cultivation, starting from farming and planting in April, to weeding and harvesting, culminating in the harvest festival in November. Participants can experience the complete process of rice cultivation throughout the year. Additionally, a self-management system implemented by individuals with agricultural experience encompasses all rice farming operations.
