About The Tale of the Ashikaga Streetlights

Strolling through a dreamlike world of lights, discovering the new charm of Ashikaga.

Details

The Ashikaga Streetlight Story is a charming nighttime lighting event. As night falls, three historical and cultural sites in the Ashikaga area will illuminate their streetlights, guiding visitors into a warm and romantic world of lights. The three streetlight locations are Banna-ji Temple, Ashikaga School, and Ashikaga Orihime Shrine. Under the glow of the lights, various ancient buildings appear even more dreamlike and mysterious, captivating visitors and prompting them to snap photos repeatedly—making it an unmissable spot for Instagram check-ins. Lighting at the main hall of Banna-ji Temple During the event, each of the three major streetlight locations offers exciting highlights. At the entrance of Ashikaga School, a parasol dance performance will be held at the Tokumon gate, while the South Garden will feature special lighting techniques that transport visitors into a dreamlike world away from the everyday. A short paper-cutting film titled "Jigaku Matsu," based on the legends of the school, will also be screened. At Ashikaga Orihime Shrine, 90 "Seven Color Meisen Lanterns" will be placed along the 229 steps. The vibrant Meisen patterns shine brilliantly under the colorful lights. The lighting at Banna-ji Temple is rich in seasonal characteristics, allowing visitors to enjoy the lights while experiencing the historical charm of the temple.
