About Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art

Tracing the footprints of Japanese art from the past century.

Details

In December 1952, the first national art museum in Japan was established. It widely collects artworks from the late 19th century to the present and introduces them through exhibitions of its collection. Currently, it holds over 13,000 artworks, including 15 important cultural properties such as Yokoyama Taikan's "Seisei Ryūten," Ryūsei Kishida's "Road and Earthen Wall (Sketch of a Passage)," and Uemura Shōen's "Mother and Child." The museum's collection exhibition, "MOMAT Collection," selects 200 items from the largest collection in Japan for display each session, rotating 4 to 5 times a year. In addition to the collection exhibitions, there are also 3 to 4 special exhibitions each year that showcase domestic and international artworks based on specific themes. The museum also offers "Collection Tours (available only in Japanese)," providing an appreciation experience akin to unraveling the mysteries of the artworks through dialogue between the guides and visitors. Additionally, the "Viewing Room" is a must-see, where visitors can enjoy beautiful scenery outside that resembles a work of art.
