About Tokyo University Akamon
The landmark building of the University of Tokyo, the most difficult university to get into in Japan.
Details
The University of Tokyo, Japan's highest institution of learning, has a vast campus filled with many historically significant buildings, among which the Akamon (Red Gate) is one of its landmark structures. Akamon is a large vermilion gate located in the Hongo campus of the University of Tokyo, built in 1827. It was constructed by Maeda Narinori, the 13th lord of the Kaga Domain, to welcome his bride, Princess Yoshiko, the daughter of the 11th shogun, Tokugawa Ienari. According to ancient Japanese customs, once a御守殿門 (Omomoriden Gate) is damaged, it cannot be rebuilt, making Akamon a precious historical building that survived disasters. In 1877, it was transferred to the University of Tokyo and has since been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. *Due to seismic reinforcement measures, Akamon has been temporarily closed since February 12, 2021 (Friday).
