About Tono Furusato Village
The old residence of Tono has been relocated here to recreate the scenery of the village from the past, serving as a tourist attraction.
Details
Tono Furusato Village is a tourist facility that recreates the landscapes of the past Tono mountain countryside. It features traditional folk houses, including the "Kurukaya" style buildings constructed from the Edo period to the mid-Meiji period, which have been relocated here and faithfully preserved in their original form. The "Kurukaya" is a traditional thatched-roof building from the Tono region of Iwate Prefecture, characterized by an L-shaped connection between the main living quarters and the stable. The village is adorned with clear, flowing streams, fields of crops, and charcoal-burning huts, all of which evoke a sense of stepping back into the rural past.
Within Tono Furusato Village, there are seven Kurukaya-style houses and straight-style houses, as well as the estate of a wealthy family and two-story buildings, all retaining the original characteristics of traditional architecture. The "Visitor Center" in the village also features a gift shop and a library, where visitors can learn about the history of Tono and purchase unique souvenirs.
Additionally, there are plenty of activities that allow visitors to experience the lifestyle of that era. You can sit by the irori (hearth) and listen to ancient stories; catch trout in the clear streams; and try your hand at indigo dyeing using flowers and plant roots. The village has dedicated individuals known as "Guardians" who protect Tono's culture and traditions, and they kindly offer assistance to those wishing to try out the experiences (prior consultation is required).
