About Toyama Castle Ruins Park
There are precious relics, Japanese gardens, and historical sightseeing spots with museums.
Details
Toyama Castle, known as the "Floating City" because it appears to float on the river, was the residence of the feudal lords who governed Toyama Prefecture for generations. The castle ruins have now been transformed into a park. It retains parts of the stone walls and moats that tell the story of its glorious past, along with the impressive "Chitose Gate" and a Japanese garden that showcases the beauty of its pond and strolling paths. It is a representative historical sightseeing spot in the area. In spring, beautiful cherry blossoms bloom, making it one of the best places to enjoy cherry blossom viewing, alongside the cherry blossom-lined paths along the Matsukawa River.
Covering an expansive area of 7.06 hectares, there are several attractions worth visiting, including two museums that are not to be missed. The public "Toyama City Folk Museum" introduces the history of the castle site from its construction to the Meiji era, spanning 400 years. In addition to its permanent exhibits, it also hosts several special exhibitions related to Toyama Prefecture each year, featuring rich and engaging content.
Another must-visit spot is the "Toyama City Sato Memorial Art Museum," established by Sato Sukekuro, a businessman from Toyama Prefecture and a renowned tea master. The museum displays over a thousand pieces of art, primarily focusing on Eastern antique art, and includes two tea rooms relocated from the Sato family and a study room made entirely of cypress wood. It is a great opportunity to experience the profound culture of the tea ceremony in an atmosphere that can be considered the essence of "Wabi-Sabi."
