Details
The unique ceramic ware of Okinawa, "Yachimun," has its origins in the Ryukyu Kingdom era and boasts a history of over 300 years. The history of the renowned pottery production area, Tsuboya, began in 1682 when the Ryukyu Kingdom centralized various kilns in this location.
The old street, approximately 400 meters long, is paved with Ryukyu limestone slabs, lined with Yachimun pottery workshops, shops, and galleries. Strolling along the old street allows you to experience Okinawa's craft culture. It is recommended to start the walking route from the entrance on the west side. Next to the giant ceramic Shisa, there is the "Naha City Tsuboya Pottery Museum," where you can learn about the history and basic techniques of Yachimun.
Continuing along the stone-paved road, you can wander through Tsuboya. After visiting various workshops and shops, you can appreciate the rich and diverse charm of Yachimun, from the traditional Tsuboya ware to unique styles that blend tradition and modernity. Additionally, exploring the small paths beside the street and weaving through the maze-like alleys is also part of the fun of walking in Tsuboya.
