🗺️ Tsukishima Nishinaka-dori (Tsukishima West Central Street)

📝 Introduction

The most famous place for monjayaki is Tsukishima Old Street, where you can taste traditional delicacies in a nostalgic atmosphere.

📖 Details

Tsukishima is a town built between 1882 and 1893 through land reclamation in Tokyo Bay. "Tsukishima Nishinaka Street" is a popular tourist spot that runs through the city center. Today, this street is home to about 85 restaurants specializing in monjayaki, which is why it is called "Monjayaki Street." Monjayaki was originally a snack sold by casual dining establishments, and it was a simple dish made by pouring batter onto a griddle to cook into thin pancakes, then finishing it off with soy sauce. The name "monjayaki" comes from the fact that children would playfully write characters with the batter on the griddle while eating, hence the name.

⭐ Highlights

The old street famous for its "Monjayaki" (文字燒) is home to around 85 Monjayaki restaurants. This area was developed approximately 130 years ago through land reclamation.
