Details

Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū is located in the center of Kamakura City and has long been loved by the public as a symbol of Kamakura. This shrine, deeply connected with Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, continually attracts many believers who come to pay their respects. The main hall was built in 1828 and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū is known for its beautiful scenery throughout the four seasons. In the grounds, the "Genpei Pond" features cherry blossoms in spring and lotuses in summer; the "Shirakihata Shrine" within the compound is a popular spot for autumn maple viewing, and in winter, visitors can enjoy the "New Year's Peony" in the "Shin'en Peony Garden."
