About Uji City Tea Room - Daifūan

A traditional tea house for tasting authentic Uji tea and experiencing tea brewing.

Details

Daiho-an is a traditional tea room established by Uji City to promote Uji tea and the tea ceremony, located along the Uji River. It is named Daiho-an because it faces the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin Temple from a distance. Here, even if you are not familiar with the formal tea brewing process, you can easily enjoy the tea ceremony. It offers authentic Uji tea brewed by a tea ceremony teacher, paired with seasonal sweets. The rich and smooth matcha set is typically served with "usucha" (thin tea), and during specific periods, there is a dual-flavor set featuring both "koicha" (thick tea) and "usucha." Four times a month, "Sencha Day" is held, where you can taste the fresh aroma and elegant astringency of "sencha," as well as the rich flavor of the highest grade Japanese tea, "gyokuro." Tickets for the day can be purchased at the nearby "Uji City Tourist Center." Additionally, you can participate in the popular "Tea Brewing Experience," which is favored by those new to the tea ceremony. First, you taste the tea brewed by the teacher, take note of the steps, and then challenge yourself to brew tea. Reservations for the "Tea Brewing Experience," "Usucha & Koicha Set," and "Gyokuro & Sencha Set" must be made at least three days in advance through the official website or by phone.
