About Usagiya of Meisen and Antique Fabrics

It is a treasure trove for those who love kimono, antiques, and handmade crafts.

Details

Usagiya, specializing in Meisen and antique fabrics, is a clothing store where you can find one of the essential textiles in Japanese clothing from the first half of the 20th century, the silk fabric "Meisen" and "antique cloth." It is particularly recommended for those interested in trying to make kimono, who love antiques, and have an interest in handmade crafts. The store has transformed an old building into a clothing shop, located along a charmingly historic approach between the "Japan Heritage Site Ashikaga School" and "Banna-ji Temple." The exterior of the store evokes a sense of nostalgia, allowing you to feel the slow passage of time. The owner personally sources various kimonos from across the country, and the store boasts a collection of over 100 different kimonos. Here, you can find a variety of kimonos differing in design style and color, as well as Meisen silk fabrics from places like Chichibu and Isesaki. Antique kimonos and yukatas are also available, starting at 3,000 yen for kimonos and 2,500 yen for yukatas, with reasonable prices. Additionally, they sell kimono silk ties and fabrics starting at 10 cm, priced very affordably at just 80 yen, making it a great place for those wanting to try their hand at handmade clothing. You can find the perfect piece for yourself by referencing the dazzling array of kimonos in the store. The second floor of the shop features a workshop and a café. Every weekend, you can enjoy seasonal fresh wagashi (Japanese sweets) and matcha sets in an elegant tatami room. Particularly on the first Saturday of each month, the store offers guests a chance to sample limited edition wagashi modeled after Meisen kimonos (limited to 20 pieces, available for advance reservation). In the workshop, kimonos or obi can be made according to customer needs. Additionally, the sister store "Ran & Tsuki," which sells incense, offers high-quality incense made only from natural ingredients. Friends looking for Japanese small items should definitely stop by! Every wagashi is so cute that it’s hard to choose!
