About Usuki Castle Ruins
Ruins of a maritime fortress built by Christian daimyōs.
Details
The castle ruins built by the well-known Christian lord Ōtomo Sōrin on Niu Island in Usuki Bay. At the time of construction, it was a natural fortress surrounded by the sea, strong and impregnable. Later, land reclamation was carried out, allowing direct access by land today. During the Edo period, it served as the residence of the Inaba clan for 15 generations and prospered for a time, but it was abandoned as a castle during the Meiji era. Today, it has been developed into Usuki Park, becoming a place for citizens to relax and stroll.
Currently, remnants of the castle still exist, including the "Utorikuchi Mon-waki Yagura" on the easternmost side, the "Tate Yagura" midway up Azuma Saka, parts of the stone walls and the dry moat in the shoin garden, all telling the story of its former glory. Additionally, there is the "Omon Yagura," restored based on photographs from the Meiji period, and stone walls with letters resembling English characters, which are also worth seeing.
Usuki Castle ruins are also a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. From late March to early April, the Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom, painting the park in soft pink hues of spring. During the cherry blossom season, the "Usuki Castle Ruins Cherry Blossom Festival" is held, featuring stage performances and food stalls, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere.
