About Wajima Morning Market
Enjoy the pleasure of food and shopping at one of Japan's three major morning markets, filled with energy every day.
Details
Due to the large-scale fire following the Noto Peninsula earthquake in January 2024, operations are currently suspended.
The Wajima Morning Market boasts a proud history of over a thousand years. Stretching approximately 360 meters, the road known as "Asaichi-dori" is lined with over 200 vendors selling fresh seafood, vegetables, processed foods, and handcrafted folk art. There is a charcoal grilling area where customers can purchase dried goods and grill them on-site, creating a lively and bustling atmosphere.
On both sides of the road, there are dining establishments that open early in the morning, allowing customers to bring seafood purchased at the market for the restaurant to prepare. Several restaurants also serve the famous "Ishiru-nabe" from the Noto Peninsula. Most vendors at the market operate from around 8 AM until noon, with the busiest time starting at 9 AM, when popular items often sell out quickly. It is recommended to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
The Wajima Morning Market has a long history, with records indicating its beginnings in the Heian period. It started as a barter system where people brought fresh agricultural products to trade during festival days at the shrine. From the Muromachi period, the market operated on the 4th and 9th of each month.
